February Newsletter

February is Heart Health Month. It sounds silly but here I go.. every person has a heart, so even if you do not have heart disease, we want to care about heart health. Nutrition plays a key role in prevention and management of heart disease. Here are some simple ways to improve the health of your heart.

  1. Eat a different color fruit and vegetable at each meal. By doing this, we then have a variety of phytonutrients in our diet. Phytonutrients are compounds found in plants and have been shown to prevent chronic illness.
  2. Choose lean proteins like poultry, fish, beans, legumes, tofu, tempeh, edamame. Lean proteins have less saturated fats, which has been linked to high cholesterol and heart disease.
  3. Stock your kitchen with whole grains and fiber-rich carbohydrates like potatoes, quinoa, barley, Banza pasta, oats, and brown rice. Fiber is essential for helping your body process and eliminate excess cholesterol in the body.
  4. Add nuts or seeds to at least 2 meals or snacks. Nuts and seeds have fiber, plus they are packed with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which have also been shown to lower cholesterol.
  5. When cooking, use olive oil or avocado oil. These oils contain less saturated fats than butter or coconut oil. Plus olive and avocado oil contain those chronic disease-fighting phytonutrients.

NEW YEAR, MORE FUN

Last month we had our first wellness workshop at Rising Sun Therapy and it was everything I imagined and more. The workshop left me feeling grateful and fulfilled, amongst other feelings. Each of the woman were lovely and I look forward to seeing them all again soon.

Happy Valentine’s Day
