We have been getting a lot of questions about magnesium lately from our clients. Asking if they should be taking a magnesium supplement because they saw on social media it is good for them. Here is what we usually tell our clients!
Magnesium is a very important mineral for the body. It plays an important role in bone health, hormone health, cellular energy production, and even brain health! Approximately ~60% of adults do not consume the RDA for magnesium. If we see a client is not meeting their magnesium needs when they come to us we recommend they increase their intake of magnesium rich foods. We start by encourage them to add in 1-2 of the following foods to their daily diet. Foods high in magnesium include beans, oats, avocado, pumpkin seeds, spinach, almonds, milk, chocolate, whole grain bread, bananas, and more.
In certain situations, and with certain diagnosis likes migraines, adding a magnesium supplement along with increasing intake of magnesium in your diet may be recommended by a medical provider and needed for symptom relief.
As always, before taking a supplement check with your medical provider or dietitian!
