Memorial Day is only a few weeks away.. can you believe it! Time flies when we are having fun 🙂 With Memorial Day, Summer break, and vacations on the horizon, I thought it would be relevant to share some of my tips and tricks for eating healthy while also having some fun foods.

  1. Eat balanced meals prior to going to the party. If it is an afternoon party, eat a balanced breakfast and lunch. Lunch may be lighter but please do not skip lunch. This will only lead to overindulging at the party. Balanced meals = complex carb + lean protein + veggie!
  2. Bring a healthy side. My favorite dishes are a hummus, pita and veggie platter, a fruit salad or a pasta salad. See my favorite recipes below!
  3. Make a plate. It is easy to stand by the food and pick. I challenge you to make a plate and be intentional about what is on it. Aim for ½ the plate fruits and veggies, ¼ lean protein and ¼ complex (fiber-rich) carbs. For example, a balanced plate could be a burger (with the bun – whole wheat if we are lucky), fruit salad and some raw veggies. Or it could be a burger (no bun), potato salad or corn on the cob, green salad and fruit. You have options!
  4. Stay hydrated. Make sure to go to the party hydrated. Then while at the party, have at least 1-2 waters or seltzers. Then you can add in a few other drinks if desired.
  5. Choose your why. This goes for all events and functions in any season. Why are you going to the event? Is it to be with friends and/or family and to connect? Or are you there to chow down on all the food and guzzle the drinks? Most of us will say it is to connect with loved ones. So let’s focus on that! Connect while also having a balanced plate of food with a drink or two.

Do you have questions about how you can eat healthier this summer, while also having fun foods? Or maybe you really would like a 1 or 2 week meal plan with exciting meal and snacks. I can help you with both! My practice offers one-on-one nutrition sessions to create and achieve your goals, as well as meal plans and meal plan sessions.
